Adventure
Our dream of backpacking through Southeast Asia, fell in the water with the arrival of our four legged companion. But offthemainroad would not be offthemainroad if a setback cannot be converted into an opportunity. When doors close, others open.
And so the question arose: “Why not just drive to Asia?” The answer was, “Why not?”
We wanted to start our overland adventure slow and easy. Trying to find some peace after the last hectic months in Belgium. Our adventure didn’t miss its start: for one month we traveled together with both our parents, discovering the beauty of Italy together. Horizons have been broadened, boundaries pushed and memories made for a life time. The perfect way to say goodbye…
In Februari 2024 we crossed the iconic Bosphorus, the gateway to Asia. We were warmly welcomed in TĂĽrkiye, we tasted delicious Georgian wine and visited the many monasteries in Armenia before reaching another milestone during our roadtrip: crossing the almighty Caucasus.
After a brief visit to Dagastan and its hospitable people, we continued our journey to Kazakhstan and crossed it’s endless steppes. We officially drove our ‘worst road ever’ in Karakalpakstan on our way to the most beautiful cities along the Silkroad in Uzbekistan. From here on we will drive the Pamir Highway from Tajikistan, along the Afghan border, to Kyrgystan and set sail towards East Asia.
From Kygrystan we will enter Kazakhstan once again and from here cross Russia into Mongolia. Through Mongolia’s famous Gobi desert and vast open landscapes, where the people and their animals roam freely over the plains, we will make our way to the Chinese border.
It won’t be easy to cross this border with Flo. The last time a dog crossed the Erenhot border was in 2019, and that was also the only time ever (we know about)… However, we’re doing our best to prepare and plan as much as we can. We will make this crossing with other overlanders to reduce the costs of the guided tour through China. Exciting!
Time to make our dream come to true! It definitely will be quite exciting to discover these countries with our adventure dog. It will be challenging, stressful and probably from time to time nerve-racking. But we are convinced that above all it will be a wonderful and rewarding experience we will never forget!
Planning far ahead is nearly impossible on this extensive journey. National borders are often fragile, and border crossings are not always straightforward. For instance, as of 2024, Myanmar’s land borders remain closed, and it is still uncertain whether they will reopen by the end of this year. If not, our only option is to cross China once again, allowing us to explore the magnificent Tibet before reaching Nepal. Let’s see what the future holds!
A road trip would be quite dull (according to Charlotte, at least) if you retraced the same steps. That’s why we’ve decided to complete the full circle! Returning home via the Southern parts of the Silk Road. An additional advantage is that we also get the chance to explore the beautiful mountains in Nepal and India’s cultural treasures. Ken can barely wait to indulge himself in the Indian cuisine! Charlotte on the other hand, can already feel the aching stomach creeping up. As for Flo, she has no clue what awaits her. Nevertheless, it will be another exceptionally unique experience.

Charlotte has visited Morocco and South Africa and was overwhelmed by the Moroccan hospitality and South African nature.
So one day we will be visiting these 2 countries and all of them in between when we drive this continent from North to South.
As you already know we’ve always dreamed of backpacking through Southeast Asia, but now that we have our four legged companion we had to abandon this plan. So the new plan was to just drive up there and visit the countries that are on our bucket list in our own 4×4 car. It’s going to be one hell of a roadtrip!
We have been travelling through Europe for some time and think it’s an amazing and diverse continent. We fell in love with Spain and Greece and can’t get enough of these countries.
Not that we visited every country on the map, but we’ve seen quite a lot. On our bucket list are Iceland, Bosnia, Norway and Romania.
We don’t have any plans in the near future to visit this part of the world.
Not that we don’t want to but our priorities lie elsewhere at the moment. But if we ever get the chance we won’t hesitate to party with the Aussies!
We will be visiting some countries in the middle east on our way to Asia like: TĂĽrkiye and Iran. But high on our bucket list are Jordan, Egypt and Saudi Arabia. We hope to get there one day!
Our plan is to hopefully one day ship our car to Canada and drive the Pan American highway. It is a childhood dream to see the beauty the United States and Canada have to offer in real life.
Our first big trip together was a month of backpacking through Nicaragua and Costa Rica. Charlotte has spent 3 months in Costa Rica to learn some Spanish. So this will come in handy when we drive the Pan American highway.
On our bucket list are Colombia, Chili, Peru and Argentina. And of course we’ll have to make Kens childhood dream of seeing the Amazon come true.
We don’t have any plans in the near future to visit this part of the world. Simply because it is impossible to drive to the Caribbean so our four legged friend would have to stay home.
Charlotte has visited Cuba once and we hope to return one day. Let’s be honest, who doesn’t dream of drinking Rum and smoking big cigars on a Caribbean beach?
